According to an article posted by The Jamaica Observer, engaging in some type of vigorous session of lovemaking can actually result in sex-related injuries, or even death. So you and your partner should be on guard should anything go wrong and present to the nearest emergency department as soon as possible.
Consultant Emergency Medicine Physician Dr Romayne Edwards explains some of the sex-related emergency department presentations.
1. Vaginismus
Vaginismus refers to painful involuntary spasm of the vaginal muscles which as you can imagine makes the chances of sexual intercourse highly unlikely. Note that it’s not only sex that can initiate vaginismus; something as simple as inserting a tampon during menstruation or a speculum for a pap smear can incite spasm of the vaginal muscle. Vaginismus can also be situational where it only occurs sometimes and with some people.
2. Long distance stulla concoction?

Some persons, before they engage in sexual activity, may want to take a Viagra tablet to increase their stamina. They may also want to combine other things such as energy drinks or alcohol with the intention of prolonging the erection. But this can actually have deleterious effects on one’s health. The practice of mixing different beverages with other substances into a potent cocktail is not recommended as this is associated with multiple side-effects which can land you in a hospital bed before the night is through.
3. Fractured penis
For such a small population as Jamaica, the number of fractured penises is on the rise and as such men should be more careful when in bed. In the heat of the moment a man may miss and hit his penis against his partner’s thigh or pelvis. While still erect he will hear an audible pop and soon after will notice that his penis becomes swollen. Men are notorious for their poor health seeking behaviour; however, this is sufficient cause for any man to see the doctor right away. Whether the method of repair is delayed or immediate, mentally the man will never be the same again.
4. Retained foreign body
You and your partner may feel a bit kinky and want to experiment a bit, be it with fresh fruits or a sex toy. But just be careful where you put them! Retained foreign bodies are a real possibility and it can become especially concerning if it is not picked up right away. A retained foreign body in the vagina, for instance, if not retrieved can act as a nidus for infection!
5. Lacerations
Some persons like it rough but how rough is too rough? Vaginal lacerations can end a night of intimacy prematurely. Vaginal lacerations are especially seen in first timers (virgins) or in women who have sex with over-excited men with large penises. A vaginal laceration may need repair by a gynaecologist as a laceration is an open wound which can act as a gateway for the transmission of infectious diseases. To prevent this, Dr Edwards advises the use of condoms when one engages in any sexual activity. Of note, vaginal lacerations may bleed continuously with the person presenting to the emergency department due to shock.
