After 27 hours of surgery, Anias has joined Jadon in recovery. These twins have been on our minds all day — and we’re so happy that they’re back with Mom, Dad, and big brother Aza.
The boys’ mother, Nicole McDonald posted on Facebook around 3 p.m. that Anias had pulled through the extra hours of his surgery.”Finally reunited,” she wrote. “How surreal.”
Nicole, surprisingly, felt no shock at seeing her previously conjoined sons as separate children. “I now realize that I always saw you as separate because seeing you like this is really nothing different to me … This is how I always saw you,” she said. With both their beloved boys back in their sight, Nicole and Christian McDonald must be feeling wave after wave of relief.
Update, 10/14/2016: It’s official — the McDonald twins have been separated. But they’re not out of the woods just yet.
The separation took place early Friday morning around 3 a.m. Thankfully, the boys’ parents, Nicole and Christina McDonald, have kept the world updated on Nicole’s Facebook page. In a post made around 4 a.m., Nicole told her followers that after 16 hours of surgery, Dr. James Goodrich of Children’s Hospital at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, was in good spirits. “Well we did it … [But] These boys were right there on top exclaimed,” meaning that the McDonald boys have been his toughest separation case in his career. The scans could not have predicted the real amount of brain tissue the boys shared — which ended up being much more than previously anticipated. Goodrich nearly called off the surgery, but somehow found a way.
